But according to Jim Brodzik, Director of Enterprise Accounts at Telaid, and Wayne Bidwell, Director of Enterprise Sales at Telaid, the retailers who approach this as a compliance checkbox are missing the bigger opportunity. What the Law Actually Requires The New York Retail Workers' Safety Act applies to retailers with more than 500 workers in New York state and requires a holistic workplace violence prevention program to be in place by January 1, 2027. In practical terms, that means documented systems, processes, training, incident reporting, and defined response procedures that provide a consistent and reliable response across all locations. A central requirement of the law is the deployment of silent alarm capabilities, commonly referred to as panic buttons, at store level. These need to be deployed and maintained consistently across every location, not just installed and forgotten. The law also introduces formal requirements around employee training and incident reporting that many retailers have not previously formalized in a documented program. It is worth noting that some retailers have actually removed silent alarms from stores in the past following incidents where employees were injured while attempting to activate them during an assault. That history makes the design and placement of these systems a genuinely important decision, not simply a procurement exercise. As Bidwell notes, details matter: alarm placement, device type, connectivity, monitoring, and maintenance all affect how well the system actually performs when it needs to. Where most retailers run into difficulty is integration. Ensuring that silent alarm systems, supporting technology, processes, and training all work together in a consistent and repeatable manner across a large store footprint requires more coordination than the technology decision alone. The system needs to function reliably at the store level, the regional level, and at the security operations center, while fitting within the retailer's existing unified security platform. Brodzik describes the typical engagement: evaluate what unified systems are already in place, integrate the chosen silent alarm solution so it can function as designed, and ensure it can be managed around the clock and scaled efficiently across the full portfolio. The goal is absolute signal reliability, not just installation. Planning for What Comes Next One of the more forward-looking points in the conversation is that New York is unlikely to be the last state to introduce requirements like these. Many states already have workplace safety laws on the books, though not retail-specific. Brodzik notes that the retailers Telaid is working with are building their programs with national scalability in mind from the beginning, so that the solution can expand beyond a single state requirement and serve as a true enterprise safety program. That framing matters because a program built narrowly to satisfy the minimum New York requirements may not scale gracefully when similar legislation passes elsewhere. Building for the enterprise from the start is both more efficient and more defensible. A Structured Approach Across the Whole Organization One of the consistent themes in the conversation is that this is not an IT project or an asset protection project. It cuts across multiple teams. Telaid's approach involves working with asset protection, operations, IT, facilities, and finance together, because aligning strategy, deployment, and ongoing maintenance across all of those functions is what makes a safety program consistent and sustainable over time. The process starts with a current state assessment: understanding how existing systems align with the new requirements, where silent alarms fit within that existing infrastructure, and what specific adjustments are needed. From there, the focus shifts to design, deployment, and lifecycle management, including proactive monitoring to ensure devices remain functional and signals transmit without delay or loss across the entire store footprint. Bidwell sums up what good execution looks like: well-integrated silent alarms, supporting systems, trained staff, and clear documented processes. All four elements have to be present for the program to work as intended. Use the Law as a Forcing Function for Simplification Brodzik's closing advice is worth sitting with. Rather than treating the New York law as a burden to satisfy minimally and move on from, use it as an opportunity to simplify and unify the broader approach to employee safety across the enterprise. A well-executed program, one that is structured, consistent, and operationally sustainable, adds long-term value to the brand. It reduces risk, improves employee confidence, and creates a documented foundation that can absorb future regulatory requirements without requiring a complete rebuild. As Brodzik puts it, workplace safety is ultimately a dance of people, process, and technology working toward a shared end goal. The law provides the deadline.
