061622-Blog-IntelligenceTechnology advances have introduced a torrent of new terms, concepts and acronyms. Machine learning. AI. Datafication. Computer vision. These terms are commonly used, but at times the definitions are not clear and it can be difficult to determine where one concept ends and another begins. For our purposes here, let’s just say that AI is the simulation of human intelligence by machines. Computer vision describes how computers can gain insights from video – processing images in the same way that human vision works. If you think about it, technology is pretty amazing. But what does it mean to businesses?

Even in the midst of investing in and implementing these technologies, stakeholders don’t necessarily understand the full ramifications. About a year ago, I joined Darvis, provider of a productivity as a service platform that uses AI and computer vision to provide ultimate visibility. In that time, I’ve had a front-row seat to witness how AI and computer vision are transforming industries. Recently, I sat down with Beth Bergmann on the Telaid Tech Connect podcast. We discussed industries that are ripe for AI applications and how these technologies will be used in the next 5 – 10 years. Here’s a sneak peek at some of those insights.

  • The power of computer vision is in its precise tracking capabilities. Offering down-to-the-centimeter accuracy for locating inventory and assets, computer vision provides more context, insight and specific information than RFID.
  • AI does not eliminate the need for employees; it empowers them with the information they need to do their jobs better.
  • Computer vision and AI will transform security and safety. Consider how computer vision can effectively verify that employees follow critical safety protocols, from hand-washing to mask-wearing. It can also be used to detect when someone entering a building is carrying a firearm, alerting security personnel or triggering building-wide active shooter protocols.
  • The blending of the digital and physical worlds will drive powerful applications. Consider the ability to create a digital twin and then test a particular medical treatment or combination of drugs to accurately predict how your physical body will react.

The future is exciting and it’s coming fast. With emerging technologies, companies will exponentially increase visibility into their business, transforming everything from operations to customer service. For more insights into AI and computer vision applications, don’t miss the Telaid Tech Connect podcast. Cheers to a bright future!
